Subject: Great Book and an Essay Contest on the Role of Men and Fathers
| | Outstanding Children's Book and Important Essay Contest Promoting Good Fathers
|
| I was introduced to One Million Men and Me by the author, Kelly Starling Lyons, who wrote an important article about the impact the absense of fathers has on children's lives. When fathers do not participate in the family structure, children, families and communities suffer. I highly recommend One Million Men and Me as a book for every household in America with children because of its strong family message and its positive view of Black men as responsible fathers in our world. Phillip Jackson Founder and Executive Director The Black Star Project One Million and Me is a picture book written by Kelly Starling Lyons and illustrated by Peter Ambush that tells the story of the Million Man March through the eyes of a little girl who attended the historic event with her father.
What's the Million Man March? The Million Man March was a very important event that took place on October 16, 1995. Black men of all ages, religions and backgrounds gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on a joint mission to inspire and empower themselves and each other to make positive and lasting changes in their families and communities.
Ms. Kelly Starling Lyons attended the March as a newspaper journalist for her city's newspaper. While at the March, she saw a little girl there with her father. It was a special moment for the young girl and her dad, and for Kelly too. It inspired her to write One Million Men and Me.
"Through this contest, we hope to encourage young people to celebrate the special moments they've had with the father figures in their lives, as they learn about this important event in Black History," says Wade Hudson, president and CEO of Just Us Books. "We also see this contest as a way to publicly recognize the many Black fathers, uncles, grandfathers, godfathers and other mentors who make a positive difference in children's lives every day."
