IDOC to Open Thomson Correctional Center
Illinois Department of Corrections Director Roger E. Walker Jr. confirmed the transfer of more than 800 maximum security prisoners and as many as 540 prison personnel to the Thomson Correctional Center beginning in January 2009.
The closing of Pontiac Correctional Center is the best thing of Illinois. Illinois taxpayers will save approximately 4 million dollars. AFSCME Local 31 was attempting to save the employment of their prison guards and the nepotism that comes along with the people who live around Pontiac prison. Communities who are receiving the previously incarcerated are interested closing prisons and utilizing the funding for building support programs for reentry to prevent recidivism. Community Support Advisory Council (CSAC) will have their last meeting for the year on Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at 1:00 pm at 1542 West 79th Street, Chicago, in the AFC building. The Honorable Congressman Danny K. Davis will be the keynote speaker. Congressman Davis will probably discuss reentry programming and elements of the Second Chance Act of 2007.
