Dear Dr. Fred,

Defending scenic shores from drilling. Protecting tranquil lakes from coal sludge. Guarding awe-inspiring mountain ranges from dynamite blasts. Saving ancient trees and stunning forests.

I could go on, but here is the short version: As 2013 draws to a close, oil and gas drilling and mining interests have their sights set on some of our nation's most iconic wild places.

Worst of all is the Keystone XL pipeline. Building this toxic fuel funnel would be the single worst disaster for our environment in our recent history. Not only would it intensify man-made climate change, it would devastate wild spaces and threaten wildlife - wolves in Canada are already being hunted by air and brutally poisoned to make way for a leaky pipeline of tar sands sludge.

And the Obama administration could make a yay or nay decision on Keystone XL in the first months of 2014.

We have just days left to prepare for what will be nothing less than a make or break year for our planet. We need you as a Sierra Club member.

To hit the ground running on January 1st, we need to raise $150,000 by midnight 12/31. Become a Sierra Club member today with a $15+ membership gift and we'll send you a FREE 1892 Backpack or Field Messenger Bag to say "thanks!"

When you join the Sierra Club, you will also get these great member-only benefits:
  • 1-year subscription to our award-wining Sierra magazine
  • Discounts on outdoor gear and more from Columbia, Travelocity, Public bikes and others
  • Your invitation to Sierra Club national and local outings
  • Updates and discounts on ways you can help reduce your carbon footprint
Defending wild places? Check. Saving wolves? Check. Fighting fracking? Check.

Sierra Club members - people who care about the environment just like you do - they do it all. And facing a threat like the habitat-destroying Keystone XL pipeline, they have never been more important.

Most importantly, as a Sierra Club member you'll also be part of big wins on fights that matter. This year alone, we generated hundreds of thousands of letters to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to save gray wolves. We confronted gas companies with dozens of local fracking campaigns. We stood proud in defense of clean energy as we marched and spoke out and kept the pressure on President Obama over Keystone.

We can't stop here. We make great strides when we stand together but we need you.

The Sierra Club is only as strong as its members. If you are ready to go toe-to-toe with Big Oil in 2014, we need to count you as a member now.

Sincerely,

Michael Brune
Executive Director
