Greetings! Our 2013-14 program schedule is now available. As a federally-funded center, MATEC offers targeted HIV training to healthcare professionals and other providers. To register for a training session, find the program on the left column and click on the date. Please note that MATEC has implemented a cancellation policy. If you are unable to attend a program, you must cancel within a specified time frame otherwise you will be charged a fee. Please see individual program listings for details. | | Adherence Counseling: A Client-Centered Approach |
Intended Audience: Primary care physicians (Internal Medicine, Family Practice, OB), Physician Assistants, Nurses, Social Workers, and Case Managers
Purpose: To help nurses and other health professionals acquire the knowledge and skills needed to help patients achieve and maintain lifelong adherence to antiretroviral therapy to effectively control HIV disease.
Objectives:- Explain the importance of adherence to antiretroviral therapy
- Identify factors that affect adherence to treatment regimens
- Describe antiretroviral drugs and how they are used in HAART regimens
- Explain client-centered counseling techniques
- Describe the RIME/EARS model of Patient Adherence Counseling
- Apply client-centered adherence counseling techniques to actual client cases
Adherence Counseling Practicum In this half day workshop, participants practice performing client-centered adherence counseling with simulated clients. |
Multidisciplinary Core Seminar on HIV Care |
Intended Audience: Nurses, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Mental Health Providers, Substance Abuse Professionals, Social Workers, Case Managers, and Public Health Professionals.
Purpose: To help nurses and other health professionals acquire the knowledge and skills needed to provide optimum care to patients based on recent advances in the management of HIV disease.
Objectives: - Identify current trends in the epidemic and implications for patient care
- Describe the clinical course of HIV and common manifestations associated with it
- Describe laboratory tests used to diagnosis HIV and assess a patient's status
- Explain current recommendations for managing the primary care of patients with HIV
- Explain the guidelines for the use and monitoring of antiretroviral therapy in patients with HIV
- Describe the common legal, emotional, and psycho-social issues that affect patient care
- Identify patient issues/concerns that affect the primary care of persons with HIV infection

Purpose: To help providers improve their HIV test counseling skills to reduce HIV transmission and promote early diagnosis.
Objectives:- Assess a patient's risk for HIV infection
- Identify ways patients/clients can reduce their risk
- Describe techniques for client-centered counseling
- Demonstrate pretest and posttest counseling for rapid HIV testing
HIV Test Counseling Practicum In this half-day workshop participants practice performing client-centered HIV test counseling with simulated clients.

Cultural Competence in HIV Care
|
Intended Audience: Primary care providers (physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dentists), mental health providers, abuse professionals, social workers, case managers, health educators, and public health professionals.
Purpose: To help health professionals improve their ability to manage the care of patients/clients from diverse cultures
Program Topics: This intensive two-day worshop uses interactive exercises and group discussions to help participants explore cultural issues and learn to be more culturally competent.
Topics include: Honoring diversity, how cultural issues affect care, cultural and cultural competence, skills for cultural competence, how we learn about culture, capacity-building for providers |
Cultural Competence with LGBT Clients |
Intended Audience: Primary care providers (physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dentists), mental health providers, substance abuse professionals, social workers, case managers, health educators, and public health professionals.
Purpose: To help health and social service providers improve their ability to provide culturally competent services to patients or clients with diverse sexual orientations and identities.
Program Topics: This one-day workshop uses exercises and group discussions to help participants learn to work more effectively with LGBT clients
Topics include: - Cultural terms and diversity within in LGBT,communities
- Culture, cultural competence, homophobia/heterosexism, and basic concepts of sexuality
- Societal perceptions about LGBT individuals and ways LGBT clients experience heterosexism
- Cross-cultural communication skills to improve interactions with LGBT clients and co-workers
- Experiences of LGBT clients and how to be more culturally competent when providing services
- Things you can do to improve cultural competence in your own practice/agency

Routine HIV Testing: Tips, Tricks & Trends in Testing |
Intended Audience: Individuals who are currently conducting routine HIV testing and those who wish to learn more about integrating HIV testing into routine care.
Purpose: This one day training will highlight best practices in routine HIV screening. Participants will share experiences and obstacles they have faced and their strategies for success.
Objectives:
- Discuss best practices and sustainability of routine HIV screening
- Describe advances in HIV testing technology
- Review legal Issues and confidentiality regarding HIV screening
- Discuss barriers an strategies regarding implementation of routine screening
- Examine linkage-to-care challenges
