The 2,100 Chicago State University students who depend on state-funded grants to help pay their tuition have had their grants cut as a result of the state's budget gridlock.

Those students have good reason to be upset, but is their anger misdirected?

Illinois now home to the highest sales taxes in the Midwest

Whether buying diapers, drills or dungarees, the average Illinoisan pays higher sales taxes than any other Midwesterner, according to a March 9 report released by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

Illinois' combined state and average local sales-tax rate of 8.64 percent surpasses that of every other Midwestern state.

Growing Illinois workforce struggles to find jobs​

While more Illinoisans are looking for work, too many are unable to find it.

Illinois is experiencing weak jobs growth, manufacturing is reeling, and the state's unemployment rate is slowly creeping up, according to a report from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, or IDES.
